Bruise
-

Saturday 10th August
- Venue: Clarence Inn
- Time: 4:00pm
- Info: Bruise met in Jim's mostly derelict home in the East End of London, a little bit further east of the fashionable east end. That says more than it might, Bruise are just that bit further east of fashion, Bruise exist where inspiration starts. With two very separate ideas of what was music Isobel and Jim's taste collided to form progressive folk like it had never been heard before. From a background of folk clubs and festivals, unacompanied singing and opened tuned guitars, Isobel had a catalogue of melodic and lyrically intense songs, Jim brought production sensibilities from early Genesis and pop genius not seen since Cindy Lauper. Their first album was much loved, critically acclaimed by The Times, The Wire and played on BBC6 Music. It opened a door to venues all over the world, from Europe to the US, their live shows gathered a momentum that left audiences slack jawed in amazement. This strong recorded presence and growing reputation as live performers won them repeat appearances at Glastonbury, support slots for cult space-rockers Hawkwind, play on US college radio, positive review after positive review and many delights on their way there. Bruise consists of Isobel Morris and Jim Kimberley, they perform as an acoustic duo then with the addition of Bob Kelly on bass they make an electric three piece. In either guise this band moves people, they move their feet and sometimes they're moved to tears. Their self assured second album 'Nobody Else', underpins the creative impact that this band have got to make. Listen, it's emo for adults, it's not 'pop' it's 'bang' and though you can't see the future you can probably hear it...

Caroline Harrison
-

Saturday 10th August
- Venue: The Bank
- Time: 6:00pm
- Info: “A voice of gold” is how Swansea’s Evening Post defines singer-songwriter Caroline Harrison. Growing up listening to Motown, Mamas & the Papas, Dusty Springfield and many more it is evident that this era has very much inspired her own sound. There is a nostalgic quality to her music that really sets her apart and an honest, deep- rooted soul in her voice that instinctively touches upon a very raw emotion. Strong vocal harmonies balance against an almost fragile vocal at times making her music not only thought provoking but extremely uplifting and certainly reminiscent of good times gone by. Over the past few months Caroline has continued to build on her ever increasing fan base playing a number of very successful sets on both London’s Acoustic circuit and across the UK. Her live performances are truly captivating. Recently opening for Charlotte Church. More recently she has been working in Scandinavia writing alongside some of the best Songwriting teams the countries have to offer. Currently writing her debut album, with growing radio support 2013 looks to be a very exciting year for Caroline.
Chris Pattermore
-
Saturday 10th August
- Venue: Ardent Gallery
- Time: 7:00pm
- Info: A talented singer, songwriter and session musician in the Bristol/Bath scene of the early 2000’s, Chris has worked with a number of well-known British artists, including Ultravox front man Midge Ure, with whom he toured Europe. Despite early successes, a period of disillusionment with the music industry led Chris to rural Wales where he redirected his energies into renovating a tumble-down cottage. Out of this self-imposed isolation he moved into the creative space which has taken his writing to a new level. In 2010 Chris came to the attention of music industry Svengali Alan McGee, who soon became an invaluable friend and mentor, helping Chris to further develop and shape his material. His tenacious belief in his songs and an inability to compromise his dream have led Chris to where he is today;

Elvis Preseli and the Undertakers
-

Friday 9th August
- Venue: Clarence Inn
- Time: 9:00pm
- Info: "I AM the only bald, Welsh-speaking, Elvis impersonator who doesn't sing Elvis songs in the world " says Gareth Benney, otherwise known as Elvis Preseli. It is a bit too much of a sales pitch to fit on the posters, and even the biggest circus barker in showbiz, Col Tom Parker, might have struggled to market him, but Gareth is a popular chap in the clubs of South Wales as well as in Germany. Having said that, the organisers of the annual Porthcawl Elvis festival just can't help believing he is poking fun at their idol. He explains: "They threw us out of the festival because I used to take a George Foreman grill on stage with me, which I called The Presizzler, and I would cook up burgers, because Elvis loved burgers. "They thought I was going too far. "I love Elvis. I always have. But they thought I was making fun of him. I was actually making fun of Elvis Impersonators." What with the improbable nylon wigs and the paunches-in-jumpsuits, Presley impersonators in general are an open goal, it has to be said. But the fact that Geraint doesn't cover any Elvis songs may have got the fans all shook up too. "I always used to sing Elvis songs, and every time I was at the karaoke I would do Suspicious Minds, but my friends got sick of it. "So now we do all kinds of other material — Gnarls Barkley, Outkast, Radiohead, Scissor Sisters — but we do them in the style of Elvis." Geraint, from Aberdare, gets around the dubious wig problem too, by not wearing one. "I have the outfits — the jumpsuit from the Vegas years, the leather one from the Comeback Special. But I don't wear a wig. And am completely bald. "I do put the sideburns on though." A keen practical joker and known for his on-stage jollity with the band, I can't help thinking Elvis would get the joke. But the ban from the festival seems to be a lifetime one. "I am barred for life, yes," says Geraint. I would suggest he starts up a fringe festival, but Elvis would never have been seen dead in a fringe.
