Penniless Cove (named after a cobbled street leading to the sea in coastal town, Tenby) was put together by Welsh singer Phoebe Osborne; her engaging songwriting and mischievous but haunting vocals are matched by a powerful command of the piano and offset by a dynamic live band which also features upright bass, cajon, strings and vocal harmonies. Penniless Cove play across the UK in tiny cellars, cinemas, garden parties and lively stages. Following their debut album Trials, Tubes and Tribulations, (2011) Penniless Cove are releasing their new Ep, Out On A Roof, in December 2012. Rarething

  • Rarething

    Sunday 11th August

    • Venue: Ardent Gallery
    • Time: 6:30pm
    • Info: Rarething are currently a 5 piece band with members from South and Mid Wales playing a variety of (mostly) acoustic instruments in a wide variety of musical styles.  The majority of the pieces they play are self-penned but they do mix-in a number of cover versions that they try to give our own twist. Jim Evans (flute) has a long history of performing and writing stretching back to his teenage years.  Jim plays flute in the Rhondda Symphony Orchestra. Chris Hudman (guitar) and Jeff Alderman (mandolin) have likewise performed and written music since the mid seventies.  They also perform as a duo under the name Brodyr.  Jon Polson (violin) has been playing the violin and piano since before the age of 10 and is currently the accompanist for two male-voice choirs. Lee Jessup (bass) is a work colleague of Jon's (who suggested Lee after a period of gigging without a bassist). After missing his first rehearsal by a matter of approx. 20 yards Lee finally turned up some weeks later; since when nobody has had the heart to tell him to go away ;-).  Like most groups of musicians they found choosing a name for the band difficult.  Suggestions ranged from 'The Deranged Orchestra' to 'Shinkin' (no.. I've no idea what it means either).  RareThing comes from the title of a song by singer-songwriter Steve Tilston and in the context of the band signifies that it is a rare thing to get such a talented group of musicians together in one place (without fights breaking out).
